Beachcombing For Success

I've chosen to do the first scene of the Fish Tank opening sequence as one of my ideas i could use for my opening sequence because it immediately shows the main character and the poor living conditions that she's living in. This is effective because it immediately shows what the plot of the film is about which is a girl that is poor and she faces challenges which effect the outcome of her life. This would fit in well with my opening sequence as it portrays the type of teenagers that our main characater associates himself with which causes him to make the wrong choices in which leads to him changing his life forever.

This is the film company in which i will be producing my opening sequence for Film4 productions. We also had to create a fact file previously showing the history and some of the big films in which film 4 productions have used. Some of these films include: This is England and Four Lions.

On the opening scene for Kidulthood. They use fast paced scenes. Fast paced scenes would be ideal for my opening sequence as it can engage the audience immediately wuith what is happening in the film and to try and tell a story in a short amount of time.

I've chosen the This is England trailer as one of my examples i could use for my opening sequence because it uses non-diegetic sound for most parts of the trailer. This non-diegetic sound is background music. Background music would be suitable for my opening sequence because it would create suspense and it would engage the audience more. However, the type of background music would be similar from the This is England trailer as it is a british social realism which my opening sequence is based on.

At 0:16 of the four lions trailer. They show a extreme long shot of the entire setting which one of the scenes is filmed. I want to use this camera shot in my opening sequence so that i can show our location that we are using for our opening sequnece. This camera shot would be suitable for my opening sequence because it can show immediately the living conditions of the main character which could either be good or bad but for our opening sequence it is bad as t is ner a council estate in South London.

Above it is the trailer for Kes. This trailer gave me certain ideas on what we could do for my opening sequence as the plot is similar to what we are going to do fr my opening sequence which is based upon a boy who faces challenges to be a better kid and help out others. It also shows ome violent scenes within the trailer which is what we will use to show the drama side of our story. Kes is also a british social realism film which is another reason why this trailer would be good to get ideas for my opening sequence.

What's In The News?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11235445/Doncaster-headteacher-pays-tribute-to-lovely-teenagers-killed-in-car-crash.html

The headline above is called 'Tributes to car crash teenagers' which is on the telegraph website. This can be used as a title for a british social realism movie due to it involving teenagers. The plot is a group of teenagers that are being questioned by the father of the son who was killed in the car crash who is also the main character of this film. All of these teenagers are being questioned for their involvement before the time the father's son was unfortunately killed in a car accident. Whilst the teenagers are getting questioned Jake's girlfriends dad (who turns out to be the killer) is soon found out by the father (Oliver Brown) which leads to the father seeking vengeance for his son's death and laters goes on a hunt for the killer of his son which leads to Jake's girlfriend (Rebecca Woods) and his other friends (George Walsh and Samantha Green) end up joining Jake's father on to kill Steven Woods to avenge their friends death.

The themes for this film are; Violence, drugs, sexuality, crime and illegal activity (isolation). We chose these themes because these themes are most suitable with a british social realism drama and would interest the audience most in my view.

The Main Location that we are going to use for this film is a place called Norwood which is in South London. We decided to choose Norwood as our primary location because it's  a place where not a lot of things happen like crime which may engage the target audience more because we are using a location that is rarely used in a british social realism film.

The characters for this movie are;

Jack Brown (Who is the person who gets killed in the accident and is  one of the main characters before he dies), he is age 19 and is training to be a police officer in the place where his girlfriend's dad works as a manager which leads to problems.

Rebecca Woods (Who is the girlfriend of Jake Brown and plays  a big part with the outcome of the story). She is aged 19 and is the daughter of the villain Oliver Woods.

Steven Woods (Who is age 40, he ends up being identified as the killer and is shown as the murderous villain that everyone ends up to hate). He works as a police officer and is angry when he discovers that Jake Brown is training in the same work place as a similar job role. He hates Jake so much because he has never had no one important in his life apart from his daughter (Rebecca Woods) who he feels he's losing to Jake and doesn't want her to leave him behind.

Oliver Brown (Who is age 45 and he is the father of the victim of the car crash Jake which leads him to finding out that it was Steven Woods who killed Jake which leads to Oliver going on a hunt for Steven to seek vengeance for his son's death)

Samantha Green and George Walsh (Who are aged 18 and 19 and are the two closes friends to Jake and are heartbroken when they realise he has been killed). They are introduced later on in the film after the other characters are introduced.

The props in which my group and i have decided to use are Cars such as Range Rovers and Mercedes, Guns such as pistols, blood at the crime scene and a mask in which Oliver Brown will wear when he is hunting for Steven. He is wearing a mask so that he can hide his identity until at the end when he reveals himself to the group.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/teen-drug-number-health-problem-america-study/story?id=13950339Another headline

Above is another headline which is called 'Teen Drug use number one health problem' in which we used to try and make a story out of for our opening sequence that we are soon folioing. It's about a drug addict who takes marijuana and once wanted to help out the homeless by paying them 20 dollars whenever we saw them. We thought of a plot which would involve a teenager named Ryan who was addicted to drugs but turned his life around to helping others with what he had faced previously. There were going to be a group of people that were his friends who try and keep him being addicted to drugs because they want ryan to follow their lead. Some of these characters include:

Ryan Adams (Who is aged 22 and is the former drug addict who tries to runaway from his past whilst helping out others that are suffering from what Ryan had in the past). He is introduced at the beginning of him 5 years ago taking drugs with his old friends.

David Edwards (Who is aged 24. He is the leader of the gang who Ryan used to be in and his main priority is to keep Ryan taking drugs with them so he can't help others with their addiction which leads to violence and crime occurring constantly). He is introduced at the beginning swell with him and Ryan taking drugs before they grew up a couple of years later.

Jonathan Green, James Evans and Chris Adams (All aged 24. They are apart of the gang in which David is in charge of and they too try to keep Ryan taking drugs by forcing him to do their dirty work and kidnapping him because they don't want to lose him) They are introduced after the first scene arriving in a black car dressed in suits so they loo smart for the occasion.

Laura Campbell (Aged 22. She is the girlfriend of Ryan who is worried about what is happening to Ryan because she doesn't  know what exactly is going on with Ryan but she can tell that something ba dis going on.) She is introduced later on in the film this is because Ryan meets her at one of the sessions that he visits.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2024486/UK-RIOTS-2011-British-youths-unpleasant-violent-world.html

My final and third headline in which I found was a headline called 'British youths are the most unpleasant and violent in the world'. I came up with a good storyline in which i could base my BSR on from this headline and it goes. A group of young teenagers which are constantly getting kicked out of schools, getting beaten up and being left by their parents. They then begin to come together to fight back against those that had beaten up and bullied them. A couple of years later they begin to get vengeance for all the torture that they had faced.  The themes for this film would be Childhood and violence because they are two common themes used in a BSR and it would be a interesting storyline that we could make from this headline. Some of the characters include:

Samuel Cram (He is 15 years old and he is the leader of the group.) He was the first kid out of the others which was bullied most at school and was most affected by what had happened to him. It is also his original plan who came up with the idea to high back at a later stage.

John, Bill and Sarah (All 15 years old. They are the others that had suffered the she what Samuel has and they all agree to join together to get payback for all the bad things which had happened to them such as bullying and tormented due to their looks and what they do. They are all introduced at the beginning of the film because I want to introduce the protagonist straight away so i can engage the audience immediately with the storyline.

Art Of The Title Format for Evil Dead 2013 (Conventions of Institutional Credits)

This is the opening sequence for the movie Evil Dead which is based on horror and survival. It was later shown on channels such as film4 a couple of years after it had released. In this opening sequence you see a list of the main characters which are involved within the movie along with the design and production team which assisted the directors to make the movie as entertaining as possible to the target audience. They show the characters first before the production and techinical people because they want the audience to know the more important people of the film before the people that assissted the editing and the production of the film. The Evil dead is a horror type of film that was shown on film4 as-well as other companies such as UK film council, Revolution films and baby cow productions at one point

Above, is a screenshot showing the first nine frames from this opening sequence for the movie ''Evil Dead'' which was produced in 2013. Also, they show some of the special effects in which 'Rupert Gillies' had used to create fear and suspense to it's target audience. Some of these effects include blood dripping/pouring, screaming and non-diegetic sound of background music to fear it's audience.

At the beginning of this opening sequence of ''Evil Dead'' they show the director's name at the beginning ''Fede Alvarez'' this is done so that the audience can immediately get engaged with the film as a popular director who had made successful movies in the past is the main director of this film which would give the audience the image that this film is going to be good.

However, as the opening sequence is coming to the end they begin to show the characters this is done so that they can build a hype  and excitement towards the audience as well as the film which would get the audience more engaged and pumped with what the film is about. As it features stars such as Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore.

The production designer for ''Evil Dead'' is a man named ''Rupert Gillies''. A production designer is someone that focuses on how the movie is produced and what to include to make the movie more scary for the audience and he does this in the opening sequence by showing flames and blood dripping behind the characters and producers name to produce that dark effect to the audience.

The opening sequence in which I decided to do my timeline on is a movie called ‘Evil Dead’. I found this opening sequence from ‘The art of the title’ website where it shows a variety of other opening sequences with a lot of other themes such as comedy and gangs but I decided to choose horror and the ‘evil dead’ opening sequence.  At the beginning of the opening sequence it shows the director’s name ‘Fede Alvarez’ which is at 00:12. I believe the production team had done this so that the audience can get a sense of hype and excitement as a popular person is the main director of the film which is ‘Fede Alvarez’. However, coming to the end of the opening sequence it begins to show the characters and who they are played by which is unusual from a big box office such as ‘Evil Dead’. Some of these actors include; Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore who are big stars and have appeared in big movies. I believe the production team decide to leave the actors at the end of the opening sequence because they want to create excitement and to engage the audience even more as popular actors are in this film which would increase the popularity and audience of this film. The special effects are used throughout the entire duration of this opening sequence which is things such as blood dripping, doors creaking and screaming. This is done by ‘Rupert Gillies’ at 01:00 mainly so that he can create a sense of fear and suspense before the film has begun which makes the audience more engaged with what’s happening or what is going to happen in the film. Below is my timeline in which I did to show at what times during the opening sequence that certain casts and members appear of the film.

Commissioner Fact File for Film 4

Film 4 is a film production company that has gone through a number of guises since it's inception, along with channel 4  in 1982. It is a company that is independent and uniquely British. Some of the films in which were shown by film 4 in previous decades such as: My beautiful launderette which was between the years 1982 and 1991,  Four weddings and a funeral which was produced between the years 1992 and 1997, Charlotte Gray was between the years 1998 and 2000 and 24 hour party people which is based on a true story which was produced through they years 2002 and 2008 and lastly, four lions which was produced in the present time period which was the 2010's.

Ethos are a set of believes or a way of doing something. Some of Film 4's ethos are: to invest around £500,000 per film, at a rate of roughly around 20 films per year. Another ethos for film 4 is to develop (new) british talent and to be seen as a leader when it comes to innovation.

Some of the themes that are involved with film 4 are themes like: drugs, violence, racism, sexual abuse, gangs and many others. These themes also relate to a british social realism type of film such as Kidulthood, Fish Tank and This is England.

Film 4 is owned by channel 4 ever since film 4 was first created way back in 1982 and have shared a partnership ever since. Film 4 are specialists in co-production and contribute between 15 and 25 percent of an independent film's budget. However, film 4 is not the only company that Channel 4 own the other channels that channel 4 owns are channels such as; More 4, E4 and Channel 4 HD. Channel 4 is also a british terrestrial TV channel. Channel 4 also owns it's own DVD distribution.

Below are some trailers of british social realism films which was showed by Film4 productions after it was released on box office.

                                                           This Is England Trailer

                                                           Four Lions Trailer

                                                           Adulthood Trailer

All of these films were shown at a certain point on Film4 channel and still shows some of these even up until present day.

The first film in which was produced by film4 was a film called Walters which was directed by Stephen Frears which was released in 1982. Film4 up to today are still a successful company due to the money they make by showing movies on their change; and bringing a larger audience to watch their film which would make film4 more popular and more of a success than it originally was.

Comparing camera and editing conventions in both a british social realism and hollywood movie

Firstly, the first convention in which i will be talking about is the Camera Conventions which are as  follows: Hand held, slow pans or tracking shots, jerky camera movements, artistic establishing shots of location, medium/close ups of main characters, dull colour palate, location shooting and loose framing. Now i will be comparing the crab shot which is when the camera is moving sideways in a straight line in both a British social realism film and a Hollywood film to see how they use colours in a certain way.

Above is a clip from Made in Britain which is a British social realism film which uses a crab shot. The crab shot is used at the beginning where it is showing Trevor walking through a garage. A crab shot is used in that scene to show the surroundings of the character whilst he is walking to a certain place. However, comparing a crab shot that is used in a Made in Britain scene of Trevor's lifestyle to the avengers which is a Bollywood type of movie I can tell that from this clip below they don't use crab shots. This is due to they using mostly close ups and long shots of the scene as well as fast paced scenes when the protagonists are fighting rather than a crab shot to show all the action to create excitement and enjoyment more effectively towards the audience as more is happening in the scene than whereas in Made in Britain the crab shot is just showing Trevor walking. This implies that Hollywood movies are more dramatic than a British social realism like Made in Britain.

Secondly, the next camera convention in which i will be talking is the dull colour palate which is used in both British social realism and a Hollywood movie. The British social realism film in which i will be discussing is Fish Tank. Fish tank is based on a young teenager who is living a difficult life and have to over come obstacles that she has to face which effects her life throughout the movie. Whereas, in a hollywood film they focus more on heroes and saving things and they don't look into lives of individuals such as teenagers they just focus on entertainment and making their films dramatic for their target audience.
